To bike or not to bike?

written by Cherie July 9, 2009
To bike or not to bike?

They say you never forget how to ride a bike, but in my case you never forget a accident. Ever since my infamous Bike accident in Austria, I was hesitant to get on a bike from that point on. Whenever a chance to ride a bike came up, I always joked about my accident and opted not do it again. Sure, my accident was pretty funny, crashing into a metal fence in Vienna, Austria. Luckily, if it hadn’t been for that fence, I would have flown into the river along with the bike. However, I was convinced to join my family on a 10 mile bike ride into the City. Their bargain being that we would dine at Goldy’s for breakfast. I had be inching to go back again. I looked at my fear in the eye, there it was. The bike standing upright on the pavement. Inch by inch I walked towards it, adjusted the seats and swung my legs over. I was now on the bike. The all too familiar fear, and anxiety came back as I peddled. As much as I joked about my accident, I was shocked to realize how scared I was of something so small, and of something so simple. Nonetheless, we wound up on a bike trail, that would take us to the city. The path was set beside a large river, winding through the forest, it was absolutely gorgeous and peaceful. Of course, I kept my eyes out for metal fences and hoped that I would not have a repeat of my Austria incident. The bike path ran through the metropolitan city of Boise, it also went past the Boise State University, and even a nature walk exhibit. What I loved about this trail was that it had a little bit of everything, nature, and the city. Soon, I became adjusted to the bike. ” It’s not so bad” I thought to myself, the thought of being scared of a bike seemed so silly. The accident had become a far distant memory now, and I had cured my fear of bikes. We had arrived into the city, and to Goldy’s. I was excited, this restaurant is one of the most popular breakfast place in Boise. On most days, the line is out the door and a table is hard to get by. But today, we only had to wait five minutes to get a table. Pretty lucky, if you ask me. I ordered my meal, the Spinach and Spaghetti frittata with a creamy cheese sauce that smothered the entire sauce. Spinach,Spaghetti, and Eggs sounds really weird? you may ask. But in reality, it is scrumptious and it is easily one dish that you would want over and over again. Overall, a bike ride is one of the best and healthiest ways to really get the feel of the city. Especially when you just had a Spinach and Spaghetti frittata. The wind rushing through your hair, as you scan the scenery with your eyes as you peddle on a sunny day. It can’t get better than that. So get out there, grab a bike and tour the city that you are in. Whether it be your hometown, a city you’re visiting. You will be surprised as to what you will find.

You’re a great writer! You should write a book! Your writing is an easy read and really exciting! Made me feel like I was right there with you on that bike trail ride!

I am very supportive of bike commuting I am glad you go back on your bike. A good fall can leave anyone a lil’ scared.
Funny, I actually started a Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing bike club at a middle school in Seattle, WA a few years back. The middle-schoolers were so into it and having a club based on being Deaf and learning about biking (mountain, road, BMX, downhill, etc.). We had the accomodations, ASL interpreter and ASL signing teacher, but funny enough people always asked, “Deaf people can ride bikes?!” I would respond, “That’s right you HEARD me!”
