Hello, Fellow Travelers!
I just discovered this really cool event! Apparently, a contestant from my hometown will be participating in the Deaflympics (yes, that’s how its really spelled) in Taipei, Taiwan. Set in September 2009, contestants from all around the world will compete in the 21st Summer Olympics. However, this one is pretty special in particular. Why? It will be the first Deaflympics held in Asia!
What are the Deaflmpics? Originally named Silent Games, their first event was organized in 1924 in Paris, France. Only 148 athletes participated that year. Since then, the Deaflympics have come along way! Recruiting more than 2,000 athletes from all over the world to compete in the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia. Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Bowling, Cycling Road, Football, Karate, Handball, Judo, Orienteering, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae kwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, Wrestling Freestyle, Wrestling Greco-Roman, Judo, Karate, and Tae kwondo will be the sports affiliated with the Deaflympics in Taiwan.
The first ever Deaflympics held in Asia will open on September 5th to the 15th of 2009
Hope to see you there supporting the Deaf Athletes as they take on the Olympics in Taiwan!
Happy Travels! 😀
